Background of the Study:
Divorce is a social phenomenon with far-reaching consequences on family dynamics and child development. In Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State, the rising incidence of divorce has sparked concerns about its effects on children’s emotional, cognitive, and social growth. Divorce often leads to significant changes in family structure, economic stability, and parental involvement, all of which are critical for a child’s development (Akinwale, 2023). The disruption of a stable home environment can result in emotional distress, behavioral issues, and academic difficulties. Moreover, social stigmas associated with divorce can further isolate affected children, impacting their self-esteem and social interactions (Oduro, 2024). Although some supportive measures and interventions have been shown to mitigate these adverse effects, there remains a considerable gap in understanding the local dynamics in Owo. This study investigates how divorce influences various dimensions of child development, aiming to provide a nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by children from divorced families. The findings are expected to inform the design of effective support programs and policy interventions to better support affected children (Chukwuma, 2025).

Statement of the Problem:
In Owo, the increasing prevalence of divorce has raised significant concerns regarding its impact on child development. Children from divorced families often experience emotional instability, academic underachievement, and social withdrawal (Ibrahim, 2023). The disruption of parental relationships, coupled with potential economic hardships, poses a challenge to the healthy development of these children. Moreover, insufficient support structures and societal stigma further exacerbate their difficulties, leading to long-term developmental issues. Addressing these challenges is critical for ensuring the well-being of affected children and fostering their overall growth.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of divorce on the emotional and psychological development of children in Owo.

  • To identify the academic and social challenges faced by children from divorced families.

  • To propose strategies for supporting the development of children affected by divorce.

Research Questions:

  • What are the effects of divorce on the emotional well-being of children in Owo?

  • How does divorce impact the academic performance of children?

  • What support mechanisms can mitigate the negative effects of divorce on child development?

Research Hypotheses:

  • Divorce has a significant negative impact on the emotional development of children in Owo.

  • Children from divorced families exhibit lower academic performance compared to those from intact families.

  • Effective support mechanisms can alleviate the adverse effects of divorce on child development.

Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it investigates the profound effects of divorce on child development in Owo. The findings will guide policymakers, educators, and mental health practitioners in developing targeted interventions to support children affected by divorce, fostering their overall well-being (Ola, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the effects of divorce on child development in Owo Local Government Area, Ondo State, focusing on emotional, academic, and social dimensions.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Divorce: The legal dissolution of a marriage, resulting in the separation of spouses (Adewale, 2023).

  • Child Development: The progression of physical, emotional, and cognitive growth in children (Balogun, 2024).

  • Emotional Stability: The ability to maintain balanced emotional responses under stress (Igbinoba, 2023).
